A Life Rooted in Danish Soil Joakim Skovgaard entered the world in Copenhagen in 1856, born into a family where the brush was as essential as the hearth. As the eldest son of Peter Christian Skovgaard, his early education was intimate and direct, receiving drawing lessons from his father from the time he was a child. This upbringing in a Grundtvigian home instilled in him a deep awareness of his Danish roots, a connection that would lat
er anchor his most significant religious and decorative works. His formal training began at the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen between 1871 and 1876. While his father’s influence provided a foundation in landscape painting, Skovgaard eventually sought broader horizons.
