The Sculptural Journey of Beniamin Kujawski Born into an orthodox Jewish family in Ryki, Poland, the man who would later be known as Zeev Ben-Zvi underwent a profound transformation that mirrored the shifting landscapes of the early twentieth century. His path to becoming a sculptor was one of immense physical and spiritual labor; he famously recounted how, after deciding to pursue sculpture at the age of nineteen, he spent his days pe
rforming grueling manual labor as a stonemason laying watermains in Jerusalem or working as a bricklayer, only to dedicate his nights to the mastery of his craft. This period of intense toil preceded his formal studies at the Academy of Art in Warsaw and his subsequent immigration to Mandatory Palestine in 1923, where he would eventually find his artistic voice.
