Born in 1928 to Jewish immigrant parents navigating the hardships of the Great Depression, his early life instilled a quiet resilience that would later manifest in the ambitious scale and unwavering conviction
of his canvases. The seeds of artistic ambition weren’t immediately sown; Held initially drifted, serving in the Navy before finding direction through a friend, Nicholas Krushenick, who encouraged him to enroll at the Art Students League of New York.
