Born in Norwich on January 9th, 1827, and tragically lost to tuberculosis at just twenty-nine years old in 1856, his career was a brief but intensely focused exploration of landscape painting, firmly rooted in the traditions of the Norwich School yet hinting at a modern sensibility. He stands as the youngest – and last truly significant – member of this influential group, inheriting their dedication to depicting the natural beauty of Norfolk while forging a style uniquely his own. His father, also John Middleton, was a respected glass stainer who continued the work of Daniel Coppin, one of the founding members of the Norwich Society of Artists, creating an artistic environment from which the younger Middleton would naturally emerge.
