    Ambiguità è una delle opere più significative della produzione post-bellica di Atanasio Soldati. Infatti oltre a essere una delle prime opere astratte a vincere un premio nell’Italia del secondo dopoguerra (caratterizzando così il Premio Gallarate per rigore sperimentale), essa sintetizza le caratteristiche della ricerca estetica di Soldati. L’artista compone l’opera prestando particolare attenzione ai contrasti cromatici qualitativi e quantitativi, rapporti tra colori complementari, tra linee e superfici. Gli equilibri formali sono poi messi in crisi da una composizione che si struttura attorno a un asse diagonale che sembra ripartire la tela in due, senza alcun riferimento di simmetria. Il complesso incastro di forme amplifica, come ricorda il titolo, l’ambiguità dell’intera opera.Il quadro risulta dunque un riferimento imprescindibile per il concretismo italiano e in particolare per il MAC. Il rigore formale e compositivo, legato alla formazione dell’artista in ambito architettonico, è esplicitato da Soldati stesso sin dalle prime sperimentazioni (attorno alla metà degli anni trenta) in cui dalla rappresentazione della realtà il pittore passa all’astrazione. Lo stesso Soldati, già nel 1935, scrive nel catalogo della propria mostra presso la Galleria Il Milione: “La pittura astratta (anche se l’aggettivo può non essere adatto) ama l’analisi, l’ordine, gli armoniosi rapporti della geometria, la chiarezza… Né riproduzioni della natura, né sensazioni della vita. Per esprimere il dramma, non c’è bisogno di coltelli o cadaveri, […] ma semplicemente di linee, di colori, di superfici, come dire di tutti i mezzi propri della pittura, senza impianti di alcuna sorta: al di sopra della letteratura. Le percezioni dell’artista sono infinitamente più preziose che le descrizioni più fedeli della realtà”. (AC)
