The Final Years
As his health continued to decline, the frequency of his painting slowed. He spent his final years in Venice, the city that had shaped both his beginning and his end. His last major work, Nelle tenebre, was displayed in 1912, just a year before he died. He left behind a body of work that moved from the bright, social observations of a young man to the deep, psychological explorations of a man who had seen the more difficult sides of life.
