The Neapolitan Rococo and the Speed of Sight
Pietro Capelli operated within the specific, theatrical atmosphere of Naples, a city that demanded visual drama. He was a painter of the Rococo, a period defined by movement and light, yet his approach was marked by a particular, almost aggressive efficiency. While many of his contemporaries relied on meticulous preparatory sketches to guide their hands, Capelli was noted for a rapid, instinctive execution. He possessed a level of imagination that allowed him to bypass the traditional sketching phase, moving directly from thought to canvas with a speed that unsettled his rivals. This was not mere haste; it was a calculated command over his medium.
His lineage was rooted in the scenography of the Teatro San Bartolomeo. His father, Giuseppe Capelli, worked as a scenic designer in Naples, and his brother, Giuseppe, applied similar principles of theatrical decoration in Rome. This upbringing in the world of stagecraft likely informed Capelli's ability to manipulate space and perspective, a skill that would define his professional output.
Technical Precision and Rivalry
Capelli’s technical repertoire was diverse, spanning the architectural illusions of quadratura to the more whimsical realms of capricci and landscape canvases. He did not merely paint scenes; he constructed them. His work often dealt with the interplay of structure and ruin, as seen in his depictions of Roman baths. His ability to handle these complex spatial arrangements placed him in direct competition with other significant figures of the era.
His professional life was defined by several key technical focuses:
- Quadratura: The art of creating architectural illusions on flat surfaces.
- Capricci: Fantastical compositions that blend real and imagined architectural elements.
- Landscape Canvases: Works focused on the natural and built environments.
His rivalry with Leonardo Coccorante highlights the competitive nature of the Neapolitan art scene. Capelli was not a passive participant in this environment; he was a forceful presence whose rapid brushwork and imaginative compositions challenged the established order of his peers.
A Legacy of Spontaneity
The significance of Capelli lies in his departure from the slow, methodical traditions of his training. Having studied under Francesco Solimena, he inherited a foundation of high-level technique, yet he chose to push the boundaries of how quickly an artist could translate a vision onto a surface. This spontaneity gave his work a directness that many of his contemporaries lacked. He was a painter of the moment, capturing the essence of a landscape or a ruin before the thought could even be formalized into a sketch. In the context of the Rococo, Capelli represents the intersection of rigorous training and the raw, unmediated impulse of the artist.
