The life of John Martin Tracy began in Rochester, Ohio, in 1843, born into a family marked by conviction and sudden tragedy. Before his arrival, his father, an abolitionist preacher and lawyer, was killed during an anti-slavery rally. This loss left his mother, Hannah Conant Tracy, to raise her children. A formidable woman in her own right, she worked as a journalist and became a dedicated activist in the suffrage movement. After his service in the Union Army, Tracy sought a life of creation, moving through the American landscape to find his footing. He spent several years working in Chicago before the pull of Europe drew him back to Paris in 1873. It was in the French capital that his personal and professional lives intertwined; he married the sister of the sculptor Emile Guillemin, further embedding himself in the artistic circles of the era. His talent was recognized on a grand scale when he exhibited at the Paris Salon in both 1874 and 1876.
Upon returning to the United States in 1878, he settled in St. Louis, Missouri. There, he established himself as a painter of landscapes and portraits, capturing the likenesses of men and the breadth of the natural world. As the years passed, his focus shifted toward the spirited subjects that would define his legacy. By 1881, he had moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, though he often sought the warmth of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to spend his winters. It was during this period that he likely became the first prominent artist to depict pointing dogs and the specific, focused energy of upland bird hunting and field trials in America.

Tracy possessed a versatile hand, moving between the quietude of landscape painting and the structured dignity of portraiture. His early years in St. Louis saw him capturing the likenesses of men, often focusing on those engaged in the spirited life of field sports. As his interests deepened, he turned his gaze toward the animals that defined the sporting life, eventually finding his true calling in the depiction of thoroughbred horses and the focused energy of trained gun dogs.
