Frans Masereelについて知る

The Life and Art of Frans Masereel

Born in the Belgian coastal town of Blankenberge, West Flanders, Frans Masereel was a painter and graphic artist who worked primarily in France. After his father passed away when he was five, his family moved to Ghent. His upbringing was shaped by his mother's marriage to a physician with strong Socialist convictions, and the family participated in protests against the working conditions of Ghent textile workers. He began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in the class of Jean Delvin. His travels to England and Germany inspired his first etchings and woodcuts. Following a period in Paris, he emigrated to Switzerland to work as a graphic artist for various journals and magazines.

Masereel's career was marked by significant movements and locations. He was a member of the group known as 'De Vijf' or 'Les Cinq', which was instrumental in introducing Expressionism to early 20th-century Belgium. Due to his pacifism and refusal to serve in the Belgian army, he could not return to Belgium at the end of World War I. He later lived in Berlin and Paris, where he painted street scenes known as the Montmartre paintings. During the Fall of France to the Nazis in 1940, he fled to several cities in Southern France. He eventually settled in Nice and later taught at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar in Saarbrücken.

Graphic Works and Legacy

Masereel is particularly recognized for his woodcuts, which often focused on political and social issues such as capitalism and war. He is noted for creating over 40 wordless novels, including Passionate Journey, The Sun, The Idea, and Story Without Words. His graphic output included various series such as:

  • 25 Images of a Man's Passion
  • The City
  • The Industrial Baron
  • The Mermaid
  • Dance of Death
  • Ages of life

In addition to his woodcut graphic novels, he produced brush and ink works like Capital and Wrath. He also served as an illustrator for various literary works and designed decorations and costumes for theatre productions. His woodcut series, characterized by expressionistic forms and sociocritical content, earned him international recognition. He died in Avignon and was buried in Ghent.
