Sheppard’s entrepreneurial spirit blossomed in the 1970s and 80s with the founding of the Roadshow Players, a traveling theater troupe that brought live performance to thousands of children across Southern California. Sheppard's artistic development was profoundly shaped by his formal education and subsequent travels. His studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) from 1948 to 1952 were particularly formative, guided by Jacques Maroger, a former technical director of the Louvre Museum. Maroger imparted a deep understanding of classical painting techniques, passed down directly from French painter Louis Anquetin. This emphasis on anatomical precision and masterful draftsmanship became a cornerstone of Sheppard’s style. Further solidifying his artistic foundation was a 1957 Guggenheim Fellowship that allowed him to study in Florence, Italy.
