Ferenczy Museum

Origins and History of the Museum

The Ferenczy Museum began its existence in 1951, established to serve as the local history collection for the town of Szentendre, Hungary. It was named in honor of the artist Károly Ferenczy. The institution has undergone several transformations in its identity and location over the decades. In 2016, the name was changed to Ferenczy Museum Centre.

The museum is maintained by the Szentendre City Government. In 2013, the collection was relocated to the Pajor Mansion, an 18th-century building. This move placed the institution within a historic monument that defines the character of the local landscape. The presence of the museum in this specific setting connects the modern administration of the collection to the architectural history of the region.

The Fine Art Collection

The collection comprises nearly 10,000 pieces, tracing a lineage from the founders of the Szentendre artist colony to the work of contemporary artists. A central presence in these halls is the art of the Ferenczy family, offering a comprehensive view of their individual contributions. The paintings of the father reside here alongside the sculptures of his daughter, Béni, and the textile works of his other daughter, Noémi.

In the old wing of the building, the second floor holds the works of The Eight. These artists were the founders of the old artists' settlement established in 1926. Their presence provides a foundation for the evolution of the local art scene that continues into the present day.

Archaeological and Historical Collections

The archaeological collection offers a window into the deep past, presenting diverse traces that span from the Paleolithic period to the late Middle Ages. These remnants provide a physical connection to the earliest human settlements in the region. The scope of these findings is significant, covering almost the entire territory of Pest County. Each object remains a quiet witness to the lives lived long before the modern era.

The historical collection is substantial, exceeding 40,000 pieces. This assembly is organized into two distinct units: the historical documentation collection and the historical object collection. The documentation collection preserves paper-based records pertaining to Szentendre, its surrounding areas, and Pest County from the 18th century onwards. These papers offer a tangible link to the administrative and social evolution of the landscape.

Complementing these records is the historical object collection, which contains items from the 19th and 20th centuries. This selection includes furniture, clothing, and various household items. Alongside these, the museum holds military objects from the First World War, badges, typewriters, and the furnishings of a grocery store from the interwar period. These everyday objects, from decorative items to simple utensils, provide a sense of the material reality of past generations.
