    O ovom umjetničkom djelu

Thousands are Sailing — mary ann evans

Mary Evans (b. 1963, Lagos, Nigeria) lives and works in London. In Evans’ work she creates silhouettes and pictograms hand cut from brown craft paper, to produce site-based, spatially dynamic installations. Pattern is a strong leitmotif in her practice. With an interest in delving beyond the purely ornamental, Evans infuses historical, geographical, or architectural clues into her work.Evans’ research interests are centered on the social and political frameworks of diaspora, migration, global mobility, and exchange. She investigates how the history of modern Britain is, in many respects, the legacy of its imperial past. Her work highlights the circuitous route via which people arrive and settle somewhere through emigration and diaspora – willingly or by force – what affects people on those journeys, what they are forced to learn and relearn, what they choose to remember and forget, and how they are irrevocably changed. Her flat, decorative patterning emphasizes the reductive nature of racial stereotyping – this reduction is rendered even more disturbing through the use of both ‘innocent’ and ‘loaded’ material. ‘Thousands Are Sailing’ is a song released by the London-based Celtic band the Pogues in 1988. The lyrics and plaintive manner in which it is sung, in the style of an Irish folk ballad, tell stories of Irish emigration to the United States: The island it is silent now but the ghosts still haunt the waves And the torch lights up a famished man Who fortune could not save …Evans explains: ‘Perhaps because of my early friendships with Irish people this music spoke to me deeply with the images it conjured up of migration, loss, belonging, alienation, and desire – all emotions I felt an affinity with due to my own diasporic experience.’ Thousands Are Sailing (2016), for EVA International, is a large wall installation depicting figurative narratives in the style of history paintings. The disposable craft paper is a metaphor for the disposable lives of those depicted in the work.

Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot): A Portrait of Victorian England

Born Mary Ann Evans in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, in 1819, George Eliot’s life was a remarkable transformation—a testament to the power of education and intellectual pursuit. Initially raised in a humble household, her early experiences instilled within her a keen observation of human nature and a deep connection to the rural landscape of England. Her pen name, George Eliot, became a deliberate shield, allowing her to break through the societal constraints placed upon women writers during the Victorian era and establish herself as a serious literary voice.

Evans’s journey began with a challenging childhood marked by poverty and family hardship. However, she received an exceptional education thanks to the generosity of a local benefactor who recognized her potential. This access to learning fueled a lifelong love of reading and writing, laying the foundation for her future success. She worked as a printer's devil and later as a journalist, honing her skills in observation, detail, and narrative—qualities that would prove invaluable in her literary career.

The Rise of George Eliot: Literary Innovation

George Eliot’s novels are celebrated for their unflinching realism, psychological depth, and profound understanding of rural England. Unlike many contemporary writers who focused on romanticized depictions of the countryside, Eliot meticulously portrayed the lives of ordinary people—farmers, laborers, and women—with honesty and empathy. Her works explored complex social issues such as poverty, class divisions, religious hypocrisy, and the changing roles of women in Victorian society.

Her early novels, like The Mill on the Floss (1861) and Adam Bede (1860), established her reputation for detailed character development and a nuanced portrayal of provincial life. These works demonstrated a remarkable ability to capture the rhythms of rural existence and the emotional lives of its inhabitants. Later, she tackled more ambitious themes in novels such as Middlemarch (1871-72) – widely considered one of the greatest English novels ever written – exploring the intricacies of marriage, ambition, and social expectations within a complex community.

    Influences and Artistic Style

Eliot’s writing was deeply influenced by her own experiences and observations. She drew heavily on the landscapes and communities she encountered during her travels and spent considerable time immersed in rural life. Her meticulous research—including interviews with local residents and detailed descriptions of settings—contributed to the authenticity of her novels. She also admired the works of novelists like Charles Dickens, but sought to move beyond sentimentality and melodrama towards a more psychologically realistic approach.

Her artistic style is characterized by its precision, clarity, and psychological insight. Eliot’s prose is renowned for its evocative descriptions of nature and its ability to convey complex emotions with subtlety and restraint. She employed a third-person narrator that allowed her to delve into the inner lives of her characters, offering readers intimate access to their thoughts and motivations.

A Legacy of Realism and Social Commentary

George Eliot’s impact on Victorian literature is undeniable. Her novels challenged conventional literary norms and paved the way for a new generation of writers who prioritized realism and psychological complexity. She demonstrated that great art could be found not only in grand narratives but also in the everyday lives of ordinary people.

Furthermore, her work remains remarkably relevant today, prompting ongoing discussions about social justice, gender roles, and the complexities of human relationships. Her legacy is secured through her enduring novels, which continue to captivate readers with their timeless themes and profound insights into the human condition. The connection between George Eliot and Sara Hennell (or Cara Bray), a fellow artist and writer who contributed illustrations for some of her works, adds another layer to her story—a testament to the collaborative spirit within the literary world of 19th-century England.

A Beacon of Contemporary Expression in the Heart of Limerick

In the historic landscape of Limerick City, where the River Shannon whispers tales of Viking settlers and medieval grandeur, lies a profound dialogue between Ireland's artistic heritage and the pulse of global contemporary expression. EVA International is not merely an exhibition; it is a living, breathing biennial that transforms the urban fabric of the city into a sprawling canvas of innovation. Established in 1977 as ‘The ’77 Exhibition of Visual Art,’ this prestigious event was born from a visionary desire to elevate Limerick’s cultural profile, bringing world-class visual arts experiences to a region eager for mainstream art discourse. Over the decades, it has evolved from a modest local endeavor into Ireland’s premier biennial, attracting international acclaim and nurturing a thriving ecosystem where tradition meets the avant-garde.

The soul of this biennial resides within the magnificent Limerick City Gallery of Art, a masterpiece of Romanesque Revival architecture. Erected in 1906 through the philanthropic legacy of William Henry Hunt, the gallery offers an arresting backdrop for artistic exploration. Its soaring ceilings and ornate architectural detailing provide a sense of timelessness, creating a striking juxtaposition when paired with the groundbreaking, often provocative pieces presented in each biennial edition. Within these walls, the past and present coexist; visitors can wander through a permanent collection featuring Irish masterpieces by luminaries such as Jack Butler Yeats and Harry Clarke, while simultaneously confronting the cutting-edge multimedia installations that define the modern era.

The reach of EVA International extends far beyond the gallery's threshold, reclaiming the city’s most iconic landmarks for the sake of artistic reinvention. The formidable King John’s Castle, a medieval fortress that dominates the Limerick skyline, frequently serves as an unexpected stage for large-scale installations. These projects deliberately challenge conventional historical narratives, using the ancient stone walls to frame contemporary concepts that provoke intellectual curiosity. This immersive experience is further enriched by the proximity of The Hunt Museum, which houses an extraordinary collection spanning four millennia—from Neolithic artifacts to Renaissance treasures. Together, these sites create a tapestry of culture where the weight of history serves to amplify the impact of modern creativity.

What truly distinguishes EVA International is its unwavering commitment to community and the cultivation of future voices. Through initiatives like Young EVA, which has empowered young creators since 1984, and the Platform Commissions that support ambitious new projects by Irish artists, the biennial acts as a vital catalyst for long-term artistic growth. For the art lover, it offers a journey through profound themes of identity and storytelling; for the collector and designer, it provides a window into the very vanguard of contemporary movement. It is a place where the echoes of medieval grandeur meet the vibrant energy of the present, ensuring that Limerick remains a vital node in the global art conversation.
