A lead sculpture of a female figure, representing Minerva, standing and holding a spear in her right hand. She is clad in armour, with a plumed helmet, belt and sash.A Roman goddess, Minerva formed the Capitoline Triad with Jupiter and Juno. Later identified with the Greek goddess Athena, she became, like this latter figure, a symbol of knowledge and wisdom, embodying the power of intelligence. Athena, Zeus’ favourite daughter, symbolises justice and reason, in contrast with the blind power of Zeus himself and of his wife Hera, and the impulsiveness of her brother, Ares (Mars). This sculpture can still be found today, together with that of Mars, on either side of the main entrance (Archers’ Room) of the ceremonial façade of the Palace of Queluz.
