Pandora, Barend Graat, 1676
barent graat (1628 – 1709)
Discover Barent Graat (1628-1709), a Dutch painter known for his genre scenes, landscapes, and equestrian portraits. Explore his works from the Golden Age.
A female figure, Pandora, sits in front of a dark tree-rich landscape, her upper body is exposed, the white shirt has fallen from the shoulders. On her golden yellow skirt lies a red silk drapery. With her left hand she holds the foot of a silver can, whose lid she touches with the other hand. Her head (seen in profile) leans shyly away from the can. Two children accompany her, behind her back a blonde child with bat wings instead of arms, and left in the shadow a dark crowned with laurel and in the hand a lance, pointing with the other hand towards the sky.
