The lines of Paris

Born in Paris, France, in 1880, Robert Polack lived through a period where the edges of illustration began to soften into something more decorative. His hands worked with the delicate textures of paper and stencil, leaving behind traces of a specific French aesthetic. The work often appeared on small, intimate objects or within the quiet pages of books, far from the scale of large canvases.

In 1925, his touch was seen on a fan held in the collection of The Fan Museum in Greenwich. This piece featured a double paper leaf, shaped like a balloon, with wooden sticks stained to hold their form. Using a pochoir technique, he rendered an elegant couple beneath a starlit sky. The smoke from a cigarette rises to form words, a small, clever detail tucked into the design.

Ink and stencil

Polack’s method relied on the precision of the stencil and the softness of watercolor. He moved between different mediums to suit the surface at hand, whether it was the thin tissue of a book or the paper of a handheld fan. His illustrations often captured figures in specific, poised moments.

Some of his known works include:

  • Handcolored illustrations on tissue for a 1928 edition of Voltaire's Candide.
  • Pochoir prints for Batschari Cigarettes, featuring figures in gentle embraces.
  • Watercolor works that utilized the layering of color to create depth on paper.

A quiet presence in print

The traces of his career are found in the small details of the Art Deco era. He focused on the way light and shadow could be captured through stenciling, creating images that felt part of a larger, fashionable atmosphere. His death in 1958 marked the end of a life spent working within these fine, controlled boundaries of print and illustration.
