A Life Shaped by Tradition and Exile Born in Santander, on the northern coast of Spain, José de Madrazo y Agudo entered a world that would eventually become defined by his family's artistic presence. His early years were rooted in the study of art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, where he learned under Gregorio Ferro. This foundation was expanded significantly when a royal grant allowed him to travel to Paris

around 1801. In the workshop of Jacques-Louis David, he found a new way of seeing. It was here that he met Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, forming a connection with a fellow student that would link his work to the principles of Neoclassicism.
