A life between borders

Alexander Molinari moved through the cities of Europe with a quiet, steady presence. Born in Berlin on 5 January 1772, he carried an Italian heritage into the Prussian landscape. His hands learned the precision of the brush and the fine tip of the draftsman's tool at the Berlin Academy of Arts, where he began his studies in 1787. The work he produced was often small, requiring a stillness of breath and a sharp eye for detail.

His path took him through Rome in 1795 and Vienna between 1796 and 1797. In Glogau, while working on the decoration of a church, he found himself part of a circle that included E. T. A. Hoffmann. Later, his travels led him to Saint Petersburg in 1806, where he entered an Italian artists' colony in Moscow. He eventually found a place within the Russian aristocracy, even finding work as a drawing teacher for the family of Count Dmitri Buturin north of Obninsk in 1810.

The movement of his life followed the shifting centers of nobility. He lived in Warsaw until 1822, then moved through Berlin before reaching Dresden, where he died on 20 January 1831.

The precision of the miniature

Molinari worked primarily with oil and watercolor, often focusing on the intimate scale of the miniature. His portraits captured the faces of the Russian and Polish nobility, translating their likenesses onto small surfaces with careful attention to bone structure and fabric. He was a painter, draftsman, and miniaturist, capable of shifting between the broad strokes of oil and the delicate, translucent layers of watercolor.

Some of his known works include:

  • Portrait of a Man (1817)
  • Portrait of Christopher Raeder
  • Portrait of A.D. Shokhin, a high quality watercolor miniature from 1806/08
  • Portrait of a Woman, an oil painting created between 1800 and 1825

His technique allowed for a specific kind of closeness. In his miniatures, such as the portrait of A.D. Shokhin, the small scale forces a direct, unhurried look at the subject. He also collaborated with Orest Kiprensky, sharing the technical demands of portraiture during a period when the Russian aristocracy sought to document their lineage through fine art.

A lasting presence in collections

Though his life ended suddenly from a stroke in Dresden, the physical traces of his work remained in the hands of those he painted. His portraits moved from private estates into the permanent care of major institutions. The precision of his hand is still visible in the galleries where his pieces are kept today.

His works can be found in several significant locations:

These collections hold the remnants of his time in Russia and his interactions with the upper classes. The small, detailed faces he rendered continue to exist as quiet observations of a vanished era.
