The Life and Art of Jay Hall Connaway

Born in Liberty, United States, Jay Hall Connaway was a realist painter and art teacher known for a muscular painterly style. His work was primarily focused on scenes of the sea and surf around Monhegan Island, Maine, as well as the snow-covered hills of Vermont. During his early years, he traveled the coasts of California and Oregon, working as a stoker on engines for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. His formal training included studies at the John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Student's League in New York City. He also studied at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

During World War I, Connaway served in France, where he worked as a cartographer and created watercolor drawings of lesions caused by mustard gas. Following the war, he held his first one-man show at the Macbeth Gallery in 1923. He spent significant time on Monhegan Island, becoming one of the three principal painters there during the 1930s and 1940s, and established the Connaway Art School. Later in life, he resided in Vermont and eventually moved to Arizona, where he died in Tucson.
