Jamie Browning Wyeth was born on July 6, 1946, in Wilmington, Delaware. He hails from a distinguished artistic lineage – the son of Andrew Wyeth and grandson of N.C. Wyeth, both renowned American painters. Raised in Chadds Ford Township, Pennsylvania, Jamie grew up immersed in an environment deeply rooted in art and creativity. His upbringing on his parents’ farm “The Mill,” mirrored that of his father, fostering a connection to the rural landscape and its inhabitants. From a young age, Jamie demonstrated exceptional artistic talent. He received early training from his aunt, Carolyn Wyeth, who emphasized fundamental drawing skills and composition techniques. Notable works feature his wife, Phyllis Mills Wyeth, who became a frequent subject due to her resilience and unique character despite being permanently crippled in an accident. His painting "Portrait of Pig" garnered significant attention and remains a highlight of his career. Wyeth’s famous portrait of John F. Kennedy, commissioned by the Kennedy family, was seen by thousands of Americans when it toured in the Bicentennial Freedom Train. The painting now hangs in the Kennedy Library in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1979, Wyeth was commissioned by the Kennedy Library to create an original lithograph and the official poster of John F. Kennedy for the library. Jamie Wyeth is a council member of the National Endowment for the Arts and serves on the board of governors of the National Space Institute. He has been elected to the National Academy of Design and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania, awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts in celebration of its 175th anniversary with an exhibition of paintings, drawings and graphics by Wyeth, the youngest artist to have such an extensive show in the country’s oldest museum.
