Daniel Murray Leo: A Highland Vision

Dan Murray Leo, known affectionately as dan leo, is an English artist born in Hammersmith, West London in 1950. His artistic journey began amidst the rugged landscapes of Scotland’s Northwest Highlands, where he absorbed inspiration from the dramatic interplay of light and shadow—a formative influence that continues to permeate his distinctive style. Initially drawn to athletics, Leo pursued a path toward performance arts before discovering his passion for acting during a pivotal encounter with “Peaky Blinders” at age 19. This experience ignited a lifelong fascination with storytelling and character development, ultimately culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting from Arts Educational School (Artsed) in 2019. Leo’s professional life took flight when he debuted on screen in an episode of BBC One's medical drama Holby City in 2019, followed by a role in the short film “Man Down.” Recognizing his burgeoning talent, he joined the ensemble cast of HBO’s anthology series “The White Lotus” for its second season filmed in Sicily as Jack—a young man from Essex—earning him recognition as Screen International's Star of Tomorrow in 2023. Further cementing his rising prominence, Leo secured a recurring role in Amazon Prime’s Citadel in 2023 and starred in his directorial debut as Dexter Mayhew opposite Ambika Mod in “One Day,” an adaptation of David Nicholls’ novel released by Netflix in 2024. The film garnered critical acclaim for its portrayal of two individuals whose lives intersect annually for twenty years following a chance encounter, highlighting Leo's ability to convey nuanced emotion and captivating storytelling. Leo’s artistic practice centers around figurative painting—primarily portraits—characterized by meticulous realism blended with evocative atmospheric landscapes. He employs acrylics on board as his medium, favoring textured surfaces that capture the essence of his subjects and surroundings. His work explores themes of vulnerability and resilience, mirroring the grandeur and austerity of the Highland environment he hails from. Recurring motifs include jagged mountain peaks juxtaposed against serene seascapes—a deliberate stylistic choice intended to convey a profound connection between human experience and the natural world. Leo’s artistic achievements have been acknowledged through prestigious awards including the Scottish Portrait Award in 2013, where he was awarded Best Fine Art Painter; Longlisted for Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2022; Commendation winner at RSA MacRobert Art Award in 2022; and Longlist in the Scottish Portrait Awards in 2018. His solo exhibitions include “Portraits,” presented at Gairloch Museum in 2023, and “Home,” showcased alongside MK Thomson at Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Edinburgh in November 2024. Furthermore, he participated in group exhibitions such as “A Closer Look” at Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Edinburgh in September 2023 and "The Crossing" with Diana Hope at Loch Torridon Gallery in 2015. His work has been featured in publications like Sky Arts Portrait of the Year television round, demonstrating his commitment to artistic exploration and engagement with contemporary culture.
