Reina e. Wooden (R76): An Artist Driven by Trauma and Healing
Reina e. Wooden, known as “reina 76 artist|r76,” is an emerging abstract expressionist hailing from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, born in 1976. Her artistic journey began with a degree in hospitality management from Howard University in Washington DC, yet her true passion lies within the realm of visual art—specifically, creating pieces designed to confront and heal emotional wounds. This intention permeates every brushstroke, reflecting her profound connection to personal experience and a desire to translate vulnerability into powerful imagery.
“I do not set out to produce art identifying a familiar topic or subject matter,” Reina articulates. “I explore new theories and how it interacts with art. Conceptual art leads me to create. It empowers me to create art with bold drastic colors, thick layers and jagged strokes on canvas, cardboard and fabric. This is a modern approach towards historical and traumatic events and the individuals who influence it.” This philosophy underscores her commitment to challenging conventional artistic boundaries and utilizing abstraction as a vehicle for conveying complex emotions—particularly those associated with domestic violence and depression.
Her technique draws heavily from the legacy of Jean-Michel Basquiat, whom she encountered during a pilgrimage to his gravesite at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn and whose artwork captivated her attention at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York City. This formative experience ignited a fascination with Afro-Venezuelan art heritage, informing her artistic vision and shaping her distinctive style. The artist’s canvases burst forth with vibrant hues—often jarring combinations—applied in thick impasto layers that convey palpable energy and texture. Jagged strokes dominate the composition, mirroring the fractured nature of trauma and symbolizing resilience amidst adversity.
Reina's work has garnered recognition within artistic circles, showcasing at witf broadcasting media company’s atrium, the Art Association of Harrisburg PA, blaqk house collections Pittsburgh PA, and in private collections spanning across continents—New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, France, and the US Embassy of Moldova. These exhibitions serve as testament to her dedication and solidify her position as a rising voice within the contemporary art landscape.
Her unwavering belief in art's capacity to foster healing—coupled with her innovative approach to technique and her grounding in cultural heritage—positions Reina e. Wooden (r76) as an artist destined for continued success and a lasting contribution to the expressive power of abstract art.

Reina e. Wooden's artistic development began with a deep engagement with hospitality management, providing her with valuable insights into human interaction and cultural understanding—elements that subtly permeate her artwork. However, it was the profound impact of personal experiences—particularly confronting trauma—that truly fueled her creative impulse. Recognizing the transformative potential of art as a tool for emotional processing, she embarked on a mission to translate vulnerability into visual narratives.
The influence of Basquiat is undeniable; his rebellious spirit and uncompromising exploration of socio-political themes resonate within Reina’s canvases. Visiting Basquiat's gravesite at Greenwood Cemetery served as a pivotal moment, solidifying her connection to Afro-Venezuelan artistic traditions and inspiring her distinctive style—characterized by bold colors, textured surfaces, and jagged strokes that convey both pain and perseverance. This stylistic choice isn’t merely aesthetic; it represents a deliberate effort to communicate the complexities of human emotion and challenge conventional artistic conventions.
Her commitment extends beyond mere technique; Reina strives to imbue her art with meaning – aiming to offer solace and empowerment to those grappling with adversity, mirroring her own journey toward healing. Her pieces are not simply visual representations but invitations to introspection, prompting viewers to confront their inner landscapes and acknowledge the scars of experience. This dedication to conveying emotion authentically distinguishes Reina e. Wooden (r76) as an artist who seeks to elevate art beyond mere decoration—transforming it into a catalyst for personal growth and societal reflection.
