The Life and Art of Narritjin Maymuru

Narritjin Maymuru was a Yolngu artist and activist from the Manggalili language group in North-East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. His artistic journey began in the 1940s following a period working as a cook. He was a significant figure in the creation of the Yirrkala Church Panels and played an influential role in the Yirrkala bark petitions of 1963, which served as a formal assertion of native title. Maymuru viewed his art as a vital medium to communicate Yolngu culture and knowledge, seeking to foster harmonious relationships between different cultures through the sharing of sacred designs.
