The Life and Art of Hendrik Frans Schaefels
Hendrik Frans Schaefels, also known as Henri François Schaefels or Rik Schaefels, was a Belgian painter, draughtsman, and engraver. Born in Antwerp, he spent his entire career in that city. He was the son of the decorative painter Hendrik Raphael Schaefels and the brother of the still life painter Lucas Victor Schaefels. His formal training began at the Antwerp Academy under Jan Baptiste de Jonghe and Jacob Jacobs, followed by work in the studio of Jan Michiel Ruyten.
His artistic output was diverse, spanning several genres:
Technical Mastery and Documentation
Schaefels was a prolific illustrator for contemporary publications, including works by Jan Renier Snieders and August Snieders. His graphic work included engravings and careful, picturesque drawings. These drawings often served as studies for his larger paintings and provided historical documentation of maritime activities, such as ships and people in the port of Antwerp.
His large-scale naval compositions, which could reach up to 9 meters in length, often utilized a pseudo-Baroque design. Beyond his studio work, he was active in local politics for the Catholic Party and served on the Antwerp city council. He was also a member of the association Artibus Patriae , which aimed to support new acquisitions for the museums in Antwerp.
