Gustave De Smet was a Belgian painter and printmaker who emerged as a central figure in the development of Flemish Expressionism . Artistic Evolution and Style

He often employed chiaroscuro effects and simplified lines to emphasize structure and expressive quality.
His later years were marked by a peak in his unique mixture of Expressionism and Cubism . Despite facing financial hardships during the Great Depression, which led to the bankruptcy of the Galerie Le Centaure and the sale of many of his works, he remained dedicated to his craft.
