After immigrating to the United States in 1929, he pursued his education diligently, enrolling at the Art Students League in New York City where he honed his artistic skills. However, destiny intervened when he enlisted in
the Marine Corps in December 1942, recognizing the call of duty and embracing a path that would profoundly shape his life’s narrative. Assigned to the 4th Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Hios underwent rigorous training preparing for the challenges of combat photography—a vocation that would soon propel him into the heart of World War II.
