Early Life and Training Nicolás de Enríquez de Vargas (1704-1790) was a pivotal Novohispanic painter from Mexico, student of Juan Rodríguez Juárez. His early life remains shrouded in obscurity, details scarce as they are, yet it is known that he embarked on his artistic journey under the tutelage of Juan Rodríguez Juárez, a prominent figure within the burgeoning art scene of Nueva España. This formative influence would prove instrumental in shaping Enríquez’s distinctive style and approach to painting.
Artistic Career and Notable Works Enríquez's professional career commenced in 1722, gaining considerable recognition by 1728 when he collaborated with José de Ibarra on the establishment of Academia de Pintores en la Ciudad de México – an institution destined to become the Real Academia Nacional San Carlos. This pivotal moment solidified his commitment to artistic education and fostered a collaborative spirit that would characterize much of his subsequent endeavors. Perhaps Enríquez’s most celebrated masterpiece is “The Baptism of Christ,” completed in 1773 for the devotional patronage of Juan Bautista Echeverría, a wealthy Spanish merchant residing in Mexico City. This monumental canvas exemplifies Enríquez's meticulous attention to detail and masterful command of composition, capturing the solemn grandeur of the biblical narrative with remarkable accuracy. The painting now resides within the esteemed collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, serving as a testament to Enríquez’s enduring legacy.
