A Life Rooted in Observation Born in 1936, Elaine Mayes’ journey into photography wasn't a sudden revelation but rather a gradual unfolding, shaped by early influences and a deep-seated curiosity about the world around her. Growing up in Philadelphia, she spent her childhood immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of traveling Yiddish theater productions led by her father, Jack Berlin – an experience that instilled within her a keen eye
for performance and human connection. This formative period fostered a sensitivity to visual storytelling, laying the groundwork for her later work. Following his death, her family moved to Los Angeles, where she enrolled in Hollywood High School, a seemingly unremarkable step that ultimately provided access to formal art education – a crucial bridge to her artistic aspirations.
