The Expressionist Pulse

Finland, 1904. A young Johan Isak Mäkelä enters the studios of Finska konstföreningen. The air in these rooms carries the weight of tradition, yet his hands seek something more restless. By 1907, he is no longer merely a student; he is an exhibitor, presenting works that begin to pulse with a new, raw energy. He finds himself among the rebels of the November group, a circle of painters including Tyko Sallinen and Ivar Alto. They do not seek the polished finish of the past. Instead, they lean into the jagged edges of expressionism.

The early years are defined by oil on canvas. His 1910 self-portrait captures a face caught in the grip of this emerging style. It is heavy, deliberate, and thick with intent. He moves through the landscape of Finnish art with a focus on the physical presence of the subject, often looking toward the earth and the sky to find his footing.

The Shift to Water and Light

1915 arrives as a rupture. The heavy application of oil begins to recede. Mäkelä turns his attention to the fluidity of watercolors, seeking a different way to capture the atmosphere of the North. This transition marks a departure from the dense textures of his earlier years toward something more translucent and light-driven. He captures the sun on the shore and the movement of clouds with a newfound lightness.

The landscapes change as his medium does:

  • Summer landscapes where trees anchor the composition.
  • Autumn clouds that drift across the paper in soft, bleeding tones.
  • Winter scenes that reflect the stark, cold clarity of the Finnish climate.

Spirit and Nature

A profound shift occurs in 1927. Mäkelä joins the Rosencreutzarna, a theosophical movement. The art begins to change again, moving away from pure observation toward a pantheistic view of the natural world. The landscape is no longer just a place; it becomes a vessel for spiritual reflection. His later works, such as the 1933 Lowland Shore, carry this weight of unseen meaning. Nature is imbued with a quiet, sacred presence.

His life ends in 1943, leaving behind a body of work that traces a path from the aggressive strokes of expressionism to a deeply spiritual interpretation of the Finnish terrain. His paintings remain held in collections such as the Finnish National Gallery, preserving these moments of light and belief.
