The Artistry of Ann Mikolowski

Ann Mikolowski was an American contemporary artist known for her diverse range of media and her role in Detroit's Cass Corridor artist movement. Her work spanned several disciplines, including painting, printmaking, and illustration. As a painter, she created portrait miniatures that were often no larger than three inches, designed to be intimate mementos, as well as large-scale waterscapes and landscapes that could reach sizes of six by seven and a half feet. Her paintings explored themes of contemporary realism, superrealism, and postwar art, utilizing techniques such as oil on canvas, watercolor, pen and ink, and pastel.

Beyond her paintings, Mikolowski was a significant figure in the small press community as a co-founder of The Alternative Press. In this capacity, she acted as an illustrator for printed matter, creating woodcut, linoleum, wood-engraved, and etched ornaments to accompany poetry. Her printmaking repertoire included silkscreen, lithography, linocut, wood engraving, drypoint, intaglio, and relief printing.
