Madalena Schwartz: A Portuguese Polymath of Stage and Lens
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1972, Madalena Schwartz – also known as Madalena Alberto – is an artist whose career has spanned captivating performances on stage, a distinguished photographic eye, and a burgeoning talent as a singer and composer. Her journey reflects a deep engagement with the arts, weaving together threads of theatre, music, and visual storytelling into a uniquely Portuguese expression. From her early work capturing the magic of productions like ‘Evita’ and ‘Les Misérables’ to her ongoing explorations of identity and artistic creation, Schwartz has established herself as a significant voice within both Portugal's cultural landscape and the international art community.
Schwartz’s initial foray into professional life began with photography, quickly establishing her reputation for documenting theatrical productions. Her work as the photographer for the 1978 production of ‘Evita’ in London is particularly noteworthy, showcasing a keen understanding of dramatic lighting and composition to capture the essence of the iconic musical. This early experience honed her visual skills and instilled a deep appreciation for the collaborative nature of live performance. Later, she transitioned into acting, earning critical acclaim for her portrayal of Fantine in the 25th anniversary production of ‘Les Misérables’ – a role demanding both vocal prowess and emotional depth.
Theatrical Roots and Artistic Evolution
Schwartz's connection to theatre is undeniably central to her artistic identity. Beyond acting, she has consistently sought opportunities within the performing arts, demonstrating a versatility that extends beyond a single discipline. Her involvement in various productions highlights a commitment to the collaborative spirit of theatrical creation, requiring adaptability, teamwork, and a willingness to contribute across multiple roles. This immersion in the world of stage provides a rich source of inspiration for her visual work, informing her approach to lighting, color palettes, and the overall narrative she seeks to convey.
Furthermore, her musical background – as both singer and composer – adds another layer to her artistic practice. Schwartz’s compositions likely draw upon her theatrical experiences, exploring themes of emotion, storytelling, and character development through music. While specific details about her musical output are less widely publicized than her photographic work, it's clear that this element of her artistry is integral to her overall creative vision.
Photography as a Window into Performance
Schwartz’s photographic work stands apart for its ability to capture not just the visual spectacle of theatrical productions but also the emotional core of the performances themselves. Her images are often characterized by a dramatic use of light and shadow, creating a sense of intimacy and immediacy that draws the viewer into the scene. She doesn't simply document the stage; she attempts to translate the energy and emotion of the performance onto the photographic canvas.
The ‘Rehearsal I - Ismael Ivo’ photograph (available on ArtsDot), exemplifies this approach, offering a glimpse behind the curtain and revealing the meticulous preparation that goes into bringing a theatrical production to life. It's a testament to her skill as a photographer and her understanding of the artistic process.

Today, Madalena Schwartz continues to pursue her multifaceted artistic endeavors, blending photography, performance, and music in ways that reflect her evolving creative vision.
