A Life of Many Forms Jens Ferdinand Willumsen lived a life that refused to be confined to a single medium. Born in Copenhagen in 1863, he moved through the decades as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, photographer, ceramist, and architect. His career, spanning more than seventy years, was marked by a restless curiosity about how much an artist could encompass. While his roots were firmly planted in Denmark, much of his existence unfo
lded abroad, particularly in France, where the air of Paris in the early 1890s offered him new ways to see. His formal training began at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen in 1882. He was a man who struggled with the rigid structures of institutional validation, failing to pass his final examination after three attempts.
