Příběh umělce May Vale
Early Life and Artistic Training
Born in Ballarat, Australia, May Vale was the daughter of the Hon. W.M.K. Vale. Her formative years involved significant travel, moving to Melbourne in 1872 and later to London, England, in 1874. It was in London that she received her education at the South Kensington School (Royal College of Art). Upon returning to Melbourne, she pursued further studies at the National Gallery Art Schools, where she was a student of Oswald Rose Campbell, George Folingsby, and Frederick McCubbin. Her training continued through her enrollment at the Linton School under Sir James Linton P.R.I. and Henry J. Stock R.I., followed by a six-month period at the Académie Julian in Paris, studying under Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury.
Professional Career and Style
Vale established herself as a painter and enamelist, exhibiting her work with the Victorian Artists Society, the Women's Art Club, and the Athenaeum. In 1893, she opened a studio in Melbourne where she worked as a commissioned portrait painter and provided art lessons. She later established an art school in the Flinders Buildings, teaching plein air painting. Her artistic approach is characterized by an intimist interpretation of Heidelberg School impressionist techniques. In addition to her painting, she studied enamelling at London's Chelsea Polytechnic Institute, later displaying enamelware brooches at the Society of Artists Exhibition in Sydney. Her works are held in various collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Castlemaine Art Museum, and the Victorian Artists Society.
