A Pioneer of American Landscape Painting Thomas Cole, jméno synonymum s počátkem specificky amerického umění, stojí jako klíčová postava 19. století v malířství. Narodil se v Bolton le Moors, Lancashire, Anglie, v roce 1801, a jeho rané roky neoznamovaly hluboký dopad, který měl na uměleckou krajinu. V roce 1818 emigroval se svou rodinou do USA a usadil se v Ohiu, Coleova cesta byla cestou sebeobjevení a uměleckého probuzení.
