The Life and Art of Ashot Zorian

Ashot Zorian was an Ottoman Empire-born Armenian Egyptian painter and educator. Born in 1905 in the coastal town of Giresun, Ottoman Empire, his early life was marked by significant hardship. Following the murder of his father, Apig Zorian, during the Armenian genocide in 1915, he lived in exile in the mountain town of Şebinkarahisar. During this period, his name was changed to Huseyin Zorian. He was later sent to the Armenian Yesayan Orphanage in Istanbul, where he was one of the students awarded a stipend to study abroad in Europe.

His formal education took him to several prestigious institutions, including the Armenian National School, the Wiener Kunstschule in Vienna, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma in Rome, and the French Academy in Rome inside Villa Medici, where he studied under Umberto Coromaldi. Known for his Fauvist figure and still life paintings, Zorian moved to Alexandria, Egypt, in 1929. He became a regular participant in the annual salon exhibitions in Alexandria and Cairo, winning a bronze medal at the 3rd salon of Alexandria in 1932.

Zorian’s career was deeply intertwined with the cultural life of Egypt. After fleeing to Cairo during World War II, he continued to exhibit and teach. He held several solo shows in Alexandria and Cairo, including exhibitions at Galerie Grégoire, Hotel Continental, and the French Cultural Center. His work, such as The Resurrection of Christ (1944), is held in the Armenian Orthodox Church in Cairo, and his paintings are part of the collection at the National Gallery of Armenia.
