Side Chair
georges jacob (1770 – 1841)
Discover Georges Jacob: French furniture master of the 18th century! Known for opulent side chairs & intricate carvings, his work reflects Rococo elegance & royal commissions.
Georges Jacob (1739–1814) specialized in the neoclassical style, which gradually supplanted the Rococo style from the mid 18th-century on. Louis XVI’s famous queen, Marie Antoinette, was a fan of this simpler, more symmetrical style. This chair bears the inscription “Meuble de la Crowne” (Furniture of the Crown) under the seat and was made for the Palace at St. Cloud. The palace, which was magnificently positioned on a hill overlooking the Seine, was purchased by the king as a retreat for the queen and their children.
