Mohammed Aboubakar Yakub: A Vision of Geometric Harmony
Mohammed Aboubakar Yakub, born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1987, is a self-taught artist whose journey into the realm of visual expression began without formal academic training. Instead, he honed his craft through relentless observation and experimentation, cultivating a distinctive style rooted in traditional decoration techniques—specifically gouache—and profoundly influenced by the rich heritage of Islamic art and architecture. His artistic vision centers on capturing intricate geometric patterns and abstract forms that resonate with spiritual depth and aesthetic beauty.
Early Influences: Yakub’s formative years were marked by exposure to Saudi Arabia's vibrant cultural landscape, fostering an appreciation for calligraphy, tessellations, and the symbolic language of Islamic design. These elements would become foundational to his artistic vocabulary.
The artist’s preoccupation with Islamic geometric design isn’t merely stylistic preference; it represents a deliberate engagement with a tradition that stretches back centuries, embodying principles of mathematical harmony and spiritual contemplation. Recurring motifs—such as hexagons, octagons, and spirals—are interwoven into intricate patterns that transcend mere decoration, conveying profound cosmological ideas rooted in Quranic verses and prophetic narratives. Yakub’s work serves as a testament to the enduring power of geometric abstraction to communicate universal truths.
Technique & Medium: Gouache—a pigment binder that produces opaque watercolor effects—has emerged as Yakub’s preferred medium. This choice allows him to achieve remarkable textural depth and luminosity while maintaining precise control over color palettes, mirroring the meticulous craftsmanship characteristic of Islamic art traditions.
Yakub's artwork distinguishes itself through its mesmerizing complexity. He skillfully blends geometric abstraction with stylized representations of floral motifs and architectural elements—often reminiscent of mosques and palaces—creating compositions that evoke a sense of serenity and grandeur. His dedication to mastering this technique underscores his commitment to honoring artistic heritage while forging new creative paths.
