The museum is housed in the elegant hôtel Lambinet , a stunning hôtel particulier designed by Élie Blanchard. Construction began in 1751 on land reclaimed from the former Clagny lake (drained in 1837). The building was bequeathed to the town of Versailles in 1929 by the heirs of Victor Lambinet and officially opened as a museum in 1932. Classified as a historical monument since 1944, its garden façade features a beautifully sculpted pediment representing an allegorical figure of architecture.
