1810 - 1892

A Life in Lines and Landscapes

Gothenburg, 1810. Jacob August Winquist enters the world, a beginning that eventually leads him to the Academy of Arts in Stockholm. The path moves from the Swedish academy to the studios of Paris, where he studies under Jules Coignett. This transition marks a shift in focus. He turns his eye toward the Swedish landscape, specifically seeking out the textures of Norrland and Värmland.

His hands move between diverse mediums. There is the precision of the draughtsperson and the weight of the painter. He works through lithography, woodcuts, and illustrations. In the 1850s and 1860s, his drawings find a home in Franz von Schéele's published work, Wermland in drawings. His presence is felt in the pages of illustrated newspapers across Sweden and Denmark.

The Swedish Terrain

The landscapes he captures are specific. He does not merely paint scenery; he documents particular corners of the Swedish geography. The forests of Hogdal in Torpshammar, Medelpad, appear through his lens. He records the view over Ytterhogdal in Hälsingland and the light near Filipstad. His work carries the weight of physical place.

His output is massive. Beyond the landscapes, he creates a vast collection of portraits. Thousands of these faces are preserved in fourteen large cartons. This prolific nature extends to his musicality; he also composed folk melodies that remain preserved for later generations.

Legacy and Preservation

The fragments of his life are scattered across significant institutions. His work resides in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Östersund Museum, and the Nordic Museum. The Jämtland County Library holds parts of his immense portrait collection. Even decades after his death in 1892, his landscapes find new life through reissues in books covering Värmland and Jämtland.
