The Life and Art of Amy Jones

Amy Jones was an American artist and muralist whose career spanned much of the twentieth century. Born in Buffalo, United States, she received her formal training at the Pratt Institute and the Albright Art Gallery. Her artistic journey took her through various influential settings, including studies in Woodstock, Provincetown, and Saranac Lake. As a founding member of the Saranac Lake Art League, she became deeply involved in the local art community, even opening a studio on the grounds of the Trudeau Institute.

While she was widely recognized for her watercolor works, such as Sandy Acre, which is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Jones was also a prolific muralist. During the Great Depression, she participated in the Treasury Relief Art Project, securing commissions for post office murals in Winsted, Connecticut; Painted Post, New York; and Scotia, New York. Her diverse body of work also included illustrations for books and magazines, as well as designs for the Lake Placid Club.

Throughout her career, her work was held in various prestigious collections, including those of the Ford Motor Company, Standard Oil Company, and the New York Hospital.

In her later years, Jones moved to Escondido, California, where she continued to work and exhibit. Her artistic output was remarkably varied, ranging from fine art to commercial illustration and works for the United States Army Art Program.
