A prominent figure in the abstract expressionist movement, his creative practice spanned various mediums, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and lithographs. He is particularly recognized for his boldly colored abstract paintings and collages characterized by jagged forms. In the later stages of his career,
as he dealt with macular degeneration, his technique evolved into working with white crayon on black paper. His academic influence was significant, as he taught at several prestigious institutions.
