1878 - 1921

The Studio and the Academy

In the quiet corners of Saint-Étienne, the beginnings of Henri Jacquier took shape before his path led him toward the more formal halls of Lyon. He spent his early years studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, a place where he earned two medals for his work. This foundation prepared him for the move to Paris, where he sought out the guidance of masters like Aimé Morot, François Flameng, and Cormon at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. His presence in the Parisian art scene became official in 1898 with his debut at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français.

His hands grew accustomed to the specific demands of military subjects. He did not merely paint soldiers; he lived within the details of their uniforms and the weight of their history. This focus led him to become a founding member of the Society of Military Painters. His skill in capturing the gravity of command earned him the Alphonse de Neuville Prize and a State Scholarship, marks of a steady, disciplined progression through the academic ranks.

A Life Captured in Uniform

The brushwork often settled on the faces of those who held authority during France's most turbulent years. As the official painter of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, Jacquier recorded the likenesses of significant figures, most notably his portraits of Marshal Joffre. These works, such as his 1915 depiction of the Marshal, carry the weight of a specific moment in history. He moved through the landscapes of war, traveling to Champagne in late 1914 and later to the north region in early 1915.

There is a certain heaviness in his later years, a reflection of the physical toll taken by his travels. The illness he contracted during these missions eventually took his life in 1921. Even after his passing, the memory of his work was gathered for a major retrospective at the Georges Petit Gallery in Paris in 1923. His paintings remain as records of a specific era, from the charcoal studies of Napoleon-era soldiers to the oil portraits of contemporary generals.
