A Life Between Medicine and Art

David Granaat lived a life defined by a dual commitment to healing and expression. Born in Amsterdam on March 14, 1914, he was the son of Louis Granaat and Sipora Vigevano. His early years were shaped by the complexities of the mid-twentieth century. During the difficult years of the Second World War, he worked as a physician, remaining available to his Jewish patients even as the circumstances of the occupation grew increasingly perilous. Alongside his wife, Aleida Anna ten Doesschot, he took in a Jewish child as a refugee, a quiet act of courage during a period of profound darkness. This period of his life was marked by the heavy responsibilities of a medical practice and the fundamental necessity of survival.

The transition from the clinical world to the world of fine arts was not a sudden departure but a gradual unfolding. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the man who had spent his days studying physiology began to spend more time with the brush and the etching needle. He eventually settled in the artist community of Bergen, finding a space where his two identities could coexist. His medical training, which included a doctoral defense in 1952 regarding physiological research, provided a disciplined foundation for the precision required in his later creative pursuits.

The Emergence of a Painter

Granaat’s formal entry into the art world arrived in 1964, when he held his debut exhibition at Galerie De Drie Hendricken in Amsterdam. This marked the beginning of a period where his presence was felt in various cultural centers. His work traveled far beyond the borders of the Netherlands, finding its way to galleries and exhibitions in cities such as:

  • Alkmaar
  • Apeldoorn
  • Rotterdam
  • Oostende
  • Basel
  • Hamburg
  • Dortmund
  • Gdansk

His development as an artist was recognized by those who studied the visual language of his era. He moved through the years with a steady hand, transitioning from the rigorous observations of a doctor to the more fluid, expressive possibilities of the canvas and the etched plate. He remained active in his creative life until his passing in Alkmaar on January 21, 2005.
