Born in 1832 in the serene landscape of Kumano, within Japan's Mie Prefecture, Kenzō’s early life was marked by a restless curiosity about the world beyond his birthplace. At twenty-three, drawn by the magnetic pull of modernization, he journeyed to Nagasaki to immerse himself in the study of Western culture. Upon relocating to Hakodate in 1859, Kenzō suffered severe frostbite that resulted in the amputation of his foot.
