The brush and the canvas
Salvador Mayol lived through the turn of the nineteenth century, leaving behind traces of his hand in oil on canvas. His work often turned inward, as seen in his Self-portrait from around 1800. In this piece, he captured himself with a steady gaze, using the medium to fix his own likeness for the years to follow. The paint sits on the surface, defining the shape of a man and the quiet space around him.
His hands also moved toward scenes of daily life and movement. One can find details of a cafe during the carnival from 1824/25, where the brush captured the atmosphere of a specific moment in time. These works focus on the figurative, placing people within their environments with a careful eye for the way light and shadow settle upon them.
A Spanish legacy
The life of Mayol is marked by his presence in the Spanish art tradition. His paintings remain held in collections such as the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, where they exist as physical records of his era. The works are not merely images but objects made of pigment and cloth, carrying the weight of the years 1775 to 1834.
Looking at what he left behind, certain themes emerge from his practice:
- The study of the self through portraiture.
- The observation of social settings, like the carnival atmosphere.
- A focus on figurative subjects and the textures of oil paint.
