About the Artist

El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) was a Greek painter born in Crete in 1541. He is known for his unique style that combines elements of Byzantine, Italian Renaissance, and Spanish Mannerist art. His works often feature elongated figures, dramatic lighting, and vivid colors.

The Painting

Laocoön is an oil painting created between 1610 and 1614 by El Greco. It measures 137.5 x 172.5 cm and is part of the collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Description

Laocoön depicts the Greek and Roman mythological story of Laocoön, a Trojan priest of Poseidon, and his two sons Antiphantes and Thyamis. According to the legend, Laocoön warned the Trojans not to bring the wooden horse inside their city walls, as it was a trap set by the Greeks. For this, he was punished by the gods who sent sea serpents to kill him and his sons. El Greco's interpretation of the story is unique in its emotional intensity and dramatic lighting. The figures are depicted with elongated bodies and faces, which adds to the sense of tension and movement. The background features a view of Toledo, Spain, where El Greco spent most of his career.

Laocoön is a powerful example of El Greco's unique style and masterful use of color and light. The painting's emotional intensity and dramatic composition make it a captivating work of art that invites viewers to explore the story behind it.
